Mechanism of Action
Albendazole binds selectively to parasite beta-tubulin and prevents its polymerisation into microtubules, collapsing the cytoskeleton of the helminth intestinal cell. Loss of microtubule function halts glucose uptake and depletes glycogen and ATP, so the worm is immobilised and dies. Its sulfoxide metabolite is the systemically active species, giving activity against tissue-dwelling larval cestodes as well as intestinal nematodes.
