Ampicillin Sodium
Also known as: Omnipen-N, Unasyn (with sulbactam), Penbritin, Ampicin
CAS Number: 69-52-3
Aminopenicillin (Beta-Lactam), Parenteral Salt
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Ampicillin acylates penicillin-binding proteins and blocks the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, producing cell wall defects and osmotic lysis. The alpha-amino group on the benzyl side chain improves penetration through Gram-negative porin channels relative to benzylpenicillin. It remains a first-line agent against Listeria monocytogenes and susceptible enterococci, where few alternatives exist.
