Mechanism of Action

Binds irreversibly to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), blocking the transpeptidation step in peptidoglycan cross-linking. Bactericidal. Active against penicillin-sensitive gram-positive cocci and selected gram-negative rods (Haemophilus influenzae, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis). Susceptible to beta-lactamase hydrolysis.
