Atazanavir Sulfate
Also known as: Reyataz, Atazor, Virataz (component of Evotaz and boosted second-line regimens)
CAS Number: 229975-97-7
HIV Protease Inhibitor
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Atazanavir is an azapeptide inhibitor that binds selectively within the active site of HIV-1 protease and prevents cleavage of viral gag and gag-pol polyproteins. Blocking this maturation step yields structurally immature, non-infectious virions. It also inhibits UGT1A1-mediated glucuronidation, which accounts for the characteristic reversible unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia seen with the class member.
