Benzylpenicillin Sodium molecular structure

Benzylpenicillin Sodium

Also known as: Crystapen, Pfizerpen, Benzylpenicillin Sodium for Injection

CAS Number: 69-57-8

Natural Penicillin Antibiotic (Beta-Lactam)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEPJPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Benzylpenicillin acylates the transpeptidase domain of penicillin-binding proteins, halting the cross-linking of peptidoglycan strands in the bacterial cell wall. The resulting weakened murein sacculus cannot withstand internal osmotic pressure, and autolysin activity completes lysis. Activity is concentrated against streptococci, meningococci, Treponema pallidum and non-beta-lactamase-producing anaerobes.
