Mechanism of Action

Butenafine is a benzylamine that inhibits squalene epoxidase, the same target as the allylamines, blocking ergosterol synthesis while causing intracellular squalene to accumulate to toxic concentrations. The squalene accumulation is fungicidal against dermatophytes rather than merely growth-arresting. Its high lipophilicity produces prolonged retention in the stratum corneum, supporting short treatment courses.
