Also known as: Capastat, Capocin, Caprihans, Capreomycin Sulphate
CAS Number: 1405-37-4
Antitubercular (Cyclic Polypeptide Injectable, Second-Line)
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Capreomycin is a cyclic polypeptide complex of capreomycins IA and IB that binds the bacterial ribosome at the interface between the 30S and 50S subunits. It blocks the tRNA translocation step of protein synthesis in a manner mechanistically related to the aminoglycosides but through a distinct binding site. This allows activity against some strains resistant to streptomycin, though cross-resistance with kanamycin and amikacin is common through rrs and tlyA mutations.
