Mechanism of Action
Cefaclor acylates penicillin-binding proteins to block peptidoglycan cross-linking, producing a structurally defective cell wall. Replacement of the 3-methyl group with chlorine improves affinity for Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis compared with first-generation oral cephalosporins. It is hydrolysed by many beta-lactamases, so activity against contemporary Enterobacterales is limited.
