Mechanism of Action

Cefadroxil binds penicillin-binding proteins and inhibits the transpeptidase-catalysed cross-linking of peptidoglycan, weakening the cell wall until osmotic lysis occurs. The para-hydroxyphenylglycyl side chain confers good oral absorption and an unusually long tissue half-life for a first-generation agent. Its spectrum is centred on streptococci, methicillin-susceptible staphylococci and community strains of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Proteus.
