Cefdinir molecular structure

Cefdinir

Also known as: Omnicef, Cefdiel, Adcef, Sefdin, Zinix

CAS Number: 91832-40-5

Third-Generation Oral Cephalosporin (Beta-Lactam)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPIPJPCP

Mechanism of Action

Cefdinir binds penicillin-binding proteins, principally PBP3 and PBP1, and prevents the transpeptidation reaction that cross-links peptidoglycan. The 7-hydroxyimino aminothiazolyl side chain gives good stability to many plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases, while the 3-vinyl group supports oral absorption. Coverage spans Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and methicillin-susceptible staphylococci.
