Mechanism of Action
First third-generation cephalosporin introduced clinically. Binds PBP-1a, PBP-1b, PBP-3. Excellent activity against Enterobacteriaceae, H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoeae, S. pneumoniae. Metabolized in vivo to desacetylcefotaxime (active metabolite with additive effects). Stable to many beta-lactamases.
