Cefpodoxime Proxetil molecular structure

Cefpodoxime Proxetil

Also known as: Vantin, Orelox, Banan, Cefpodox, Monocef-O

CAS Number: 87239-81-4

Third-Generation Oral Cephalosporin Prodrug (Beta-Lactam)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPEPIPJP

Mechanism of Action

Cefpodoxime proxetil is an orally absorbed ester prodrug that is de-esterified by intestinal esterases to release active cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime binds penicillin-binding protein 3 with high affinity, blocking septal peptidoglycan cross-linking and causing filamentation and lysis. The aminothiazolyl methoxyimino side chain confers substantial stability against many common beta-lactamases and extends the Gram-negative spectrum.
