Cefprozil molecular structure

Cefprozil

Also known as: Cefzil, Procef, Arzomicin, Refzil-O

CAS Number: 92665-29-7

Second-Generation Oral Cephalosporin (Beta-Lactam)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPEPIP

Mechanism of Action

Cefprozil acylates penicillin-binding proteins and prevents the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan cross-linking, leading to cell wall failure. The propenyl group at the 3-position improves oral absorption and half-life relative to cefaclor while retaining second-generation Gram-negative coverage. It is marketed as a mixture of cis and trans isomers in a defined ratio, with the cis isomer predominating.
