Ceftibuten
Also known as: Cedax, Isocef, Keimax, Procadax
CAS Number: 97519-39-6
Third-Generation Oral Cephalosporin (Beta-Lactam)
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Ceftibuten inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by acylating penicillin-binding proteins and blocking peptidoglycan transpeptidation. The unsubstituted 3-position and carboxypropenyl side chain give it exceptional stability against many plasmid- and chromosomally-mediated beta-lactamases while preserving oral bioavailability. Activity is strongest against Enterobacterales, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, with limited Gram-positive coverage.
