CAS Number: 104010-37-9

Third-generation veterinary cephalosporin

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPEPCP

Mechanism of Action

Ceftiofur is a third-generation cephalosporin that binds penicillin-binding proteins and blocks the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan cross-linking, causing cell wall failure and lysis in dividing bacteria. Its aminothiazolyl methoxyimino side chain confers stability against many Gram-negative beta-lactamases and a broad spectrum covering the major bovine, porcine and avian respiratory pathogens. It is rapidly metabolised in the animal to desfuroylceftiofur, which retains antibacterial activity.
