Clavulanate Potassium molecular structure

Clavulanate Potassium

Also known as: Augmentin (with amoxicillin), Timentin (with ticarcillin), Clavulin, Co-amoxiclav

CAS Number: 61177-45-5

Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor (Clavam)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPEPIPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Clavulanic acid is a suicide substrate that binds the serine residue in the active site of class A beta-lactamases and undergoes ring opening to form an irreversibly acylated enzyme. This permanent inactivation protects the partner penicillin from hydrolysis, restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Its own intrinsic antibacterial activity is negligible, so it is never used alone.
