Mechanism of Action

Clindamycin phosphate is an inactive prodrug hydrolysed in vivo by alkaline phosphatases to clindamycin, which binds the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyl transferase centre and blocks peptide bond formation. It also suppresses bacterial toxin synthesis at sub-inhibitory concentrations, which is the basis of its use in toxin-mediated infections. Activity spans Gram-positive cocci, anaerobes and Propionibacterium acnes.
