Clotrimazole molecular structure

Clotrimazole

Also known as: Canesten, Candid, Lotrimin, Mycelex, Clocip, Surfaz

CAS Number: 23593-75-1

Imidazole antifungal — topical

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPEPIPJPCP

Mechanism of Action

Clotrimazole binds fungal cytochrome P450 14-alpha-demethylase and blocks ergosterol biosynthesis, increasing membrane permeability and causing leakage of intracellular potassium and phosphorus. At higher topical concentrations it acts directly on the membrane and inhibits fungal peroxidases, producing a fungicidal effect. It also has useful activity against Corynebacterium minutissimum and Trichomonas.
