Mechanism of Action

Cycloserine is a structural analogue of D-alanine that competitively inhibits alanine racemase (Alr) and D-alanine:D-alanine ligase (Ddl). Blocking these enzymes prevents formation of the D-alanyl-D-alanine dipeptide required for peptidoglycan cross-linking. The result is a defective cell wall and bacteriostatic activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with no cross-resistance to other antitubercular classes.
