Dihydroartemisinin molecular structure

Dihydroartemisinin

Also known as: Eurartesim (with piperaquine), Duo-Cotecxin, Artenimol, Cotecxin

CAS Number: 71939-50-9

Antimalarial (Artemisinin Derivative)

Pharmacopeia Standards

Mechanism of Action

Dihydroartemisinin is the common active metabolite of artemether, artesunate and artemisinin itself, and carries the same activating endoperoxide bridge. Iron-mediated cleavage yields alkylating free radicals that damage parasite proteins, membranes and haem detoxification machinery. It is the most potent member of the class on a molar basis and acts across asexual blood stages and young gametocytes.
