Mechanism of Action

Semi-synthetic tetracycline that reversibly binds the 30S ribosomal subunit (A-site), blocking aminoacyl-tRNA binding to the mRNA–ribosome complex, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Bacteriostatic. Active against a uniquely broad range: aerobic gram-positives/negatives, atypical organisms (Rickettsia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Borrelia), spirochetes, some protozoa (Plasmodium), and mycobacteria.
