Enrofloxacin molecular structure

Enrofloxacin

Also known as: Baytril, Enroxil, Enrotril, Floxidin, Enrocin

CAS Number: 93106-60-6

Veterinary fluoroquinolone antibacterial

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPEPCP

Mechanism of Action

Enrofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, trapping the enzyme-DNA cleavage complex and preventing supercoiling and strand religation, which is rapidly bactericidal and concentration-dependent. Its spectrum spans Gram-negative pathogens, many Gram-positive organisms and Mycoplasma, with excellent tissue and intracellular penetration. In the target animal it is partly de-ethylated to ciprofloxacin, which contributes to the overall antibacterial effect.
