Ethambutol Hydrochloride molecular structure

Ethambutol Hydrochloride

Also known as: Myambutol, Combutol, Ethide, Themibutol, Servambutol

CAS Number: 1070-11-7

Antitubercular (Ethylenediamine Derivative)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEPJPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Ethambutol inhibits the arabinosyl transferases encoded by the embCAB operon, which polymerise arabinose into the arabinogalactan and lipoarabinomannan of the mycobacterial cell wall. Loss of arabinan assembly leaves mycolic acids unanchored and increases cell wall permeability. The resulting bacteriostatic effect also potentiates the entry and activity of companion drugs in combination regimens.
