CAS Number: 259793-96-9

Antiviral (Broad-Spectrum RNA Polymerase Inhibitor)

Pharmacopeia Standards

IPJP

Mechanism of Action

Favipiravir is a pyrazinecarboxamide prodrug converted intracellularly by hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase to favipiravir ribofuranosyl 5-triphosphate. The active form is recognised as a purine nucleotide analogue by viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and is incorporated into nascent viral RNA. Incorporation causes chain termination and lethal mutagenesis while sparing host DNA and RNA polymerases.
