Florfenicol
Also known as: Nuflor, Aquaflor, Florkem, Resflor Gold, Selectan
CAS Number: 73231-34-2
Veterinary amphenicol antibiotic
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Florfenicol binds the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyl transferase centre and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis in the same manner as chloramphenicol. Substitution of the C-3 hydroxyl with fluorine blocks inactivation by bacterial acetyltransferases, so florfenicol retains activity against many chloramphenicol-resistant isolates. Its spectrum covers the major bovine and porcine respiratory pathogens as well as fish pathogens such as Aeromonas and Flavobacterium.
