Furazolidone molecular structure

Furazolidone

Also known as: Furoxone, Dependal-M, Furoxil, Neftin

CAS Number: 67-45-8

Nitrofuran antibacterial and antiprotozoal

Pharmacopeia Standards

BPIPCPUSP

Mechanism of Action

Furazolidone is reduced by bacterial nitroreductases to reactive intermediates that cross-link DNA and inactivate multiple enzyme systems, producing a broad bactericidal effect against enteric Gram-negative organisms, Giardia and Trichomonas. It also acts as a weak reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor at therapeutic exposures, which underlies its dietary and drug interaction cautions. Resistance development is slow because several bacterial targets are hit at once.
