Mechanism of Action
Gemifloxacin binds DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV with unusually high affinity for the pneumococcal topoisomerase IV, giving it among the lowest MICs of any marketed quinolone against Streptococcus pneumoniae. The naphthyridone core with a C7 pyrrolidinyl oxime side chain drives this enhanced Gram-positive potency. Killing is rapid and concentration dependent.
