Mechanism of Action

Ivermectin binds with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride channels found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, driving a sustained chloride influx that hyperpolarises the membrane. The parasite is paralysed and dies, while mammals are largely spared because these channels are absent and the blood-brain barrier restricts CNS penetration. It also potentiates GABA-gated chloride transmission in susceptible invertebrates.
