Kanamycin Sulfate molecular structure

Kanamycin Sulfate

Also known as: Kantrex, Kanamac, Kanacyn, Kanrid

CAS Number: 25389-94-0

Antitubercular / Aminoglycoside Antibiotic

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEPJP

Mechanism of Action

Kanamycin binds the 16S ribosomal RNA of the 30S ribosomal subunit and induces misreading of the genetic code during translation. Incorporation of incorrect amino acids yields non-functional proteins and compromises membrane integrity, allowing further drug uptake in a self-amplifying cycle. The result is rapid concentration-dependent bactericidal activity against extracellular mycobacteria and many aerobic Gram-negative organisms.
