Mechanism of Action

Levamisole is a selective agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on nematode muscle, producing sustained depolarisation, spastic paralysis and expulsion of the worm by peristalsis. It is the levo-isomer of tetramisole and carries essentially all of the racemate’s anthelmintic activity. Separately, it stimulates T-cell and macrophage function, which underpins its historical use as an adjuvant immunomodulator.
