Mebendazole molecular structure

Mebendazole

Also known as: Vermox, Emverm, Mebex, Wormin, Antiox, Ovex

CAS Number: 31431-39-7

Broad-Spectrum Anthelmintic (Benzimidazole Carbamate)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Mebendazole binds parasite beta-tubulin with high selectivity and blocks microtubule assembly in the helminth gut cell. The resulting failure of glucose absorption and vesicular transport depletes worm glycogen stores and ATP production, causing paralysis and expulsion. Very low systemic absorption keeps the drug concentrated in the intestinal lumen, which suits it to intestinal nematode infections.
