Micafungin Sodium
Also known as: Mycamine, Funguard, Micafung, Mycafin, Micaris
CAS Number: 208538-73-2
Echinocandin antifungal — systemic, parenteral
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Micafungin non-competitively inhibits beta-(1,3)-D-glucan synthase, halting synthesis of the glucan polymer that gives the fungal cell wall its mechanical strength. The weakened wall ruptures under internal osmotic pressure, producing concentration-dependent fungicidal activity against Candida including azole-resistant isolates. It requires no loading dose or renal adjustment and has minimal cytochrome P450 involvement, which simplifies use in transplant and ICU patients.
