Mechanism of Action
Nifuroxazide is reduced by enteric bacterial nitroreductases to reactive species that inhibit dehydrogenase enzymes and disrupt bacterial protein and nucleic acid synthesis. Because the molecule is essentially not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, activity is confined to the gut lumen and systemic exposure is negligible. It has also attracted research interest as a STAT3 signalling inhibitor, though that is not a registered use.
