Ofloxacin
Also known as: Floxin, Tarivid, Oflox, Zanocin, Exocin, Ocuflox
CAS Number: 82419-36-1
Fluoroquinolone Antibacterial
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, trapping the enzyme-DNA cleavage complex and preventing religation of double-strand breaks. The resulting fragmented chromosome triggers rapid bactericidal killing that is concentration dependent. It is the racemate whose S-enantiomer is levofloxacin.
