Ornidazole
Also known as: Tiberal, Ornidal, Ornof, Dazolic, Giro
CAS Number: 16773-42-5
Nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antianaerobic
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Ornidazole enters anaerobic organisms by passive diffusion and undergoes reduction of its 5-nitro group by low-redox-potential ferredoxin systems, generating short-lived nitro radical anions. These species cause strand breaks and helix destabilisation in microbial DNA and disable repair, killing the organism. The chlorohydroxypropyl side chain gives a longer elimination half-life than metronidazole, supporting twice-daily dosing regimens.
