Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride molecular structure

Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride

Also known as: Terramycin, Oxymycin, Liquamycin, Engemycin, Tetravet

CAS Number: 2058-46-0

Tetracycline Antibacterial

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPEPIPJPCPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Oxytetracycline binds the 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents aminoacyl-tRNA from docking at the A site, arresting protein synthesis in a bacteriostatic manner. Active uptake into Gram-negative cells via porins and energy-dependent transport gives selective accumulation in bacteria over mammalian cells. The C5 hydroxyl distinguishes it from tetracycline and modestly alters its chelation and tissue distribution.
