Phenoxymethylpenicillin Potassium
Also known as: Penicillin V Potassium, Ospen, Phenopen, V-Cillin K
CAS Number: 132-98-9
Oral Natural Penicillin (Beta-Lactam)
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
The phenoxymethyl side chain confers acid stability, allowing oral absorption without gastric degradation of the beta-lactam ring. Once absorbed, the molecule acylates penicillin-binding proteins and arrests peptidoglycan transpeptidation, producing a defective cell wall and osmotic lysis. Its spectrum mirrors benzylpenicillin, centred on streptococci and oral anaerobes.
