Polymyxin B Sulfate molecular structure

Polymyxin B Sulfate

Also known as: Aerosporin, Polymyxin B for Injection, Polytrim, Neosporin and Polysporin components

CAS Number: 1405-20-5

Cyclic polypeptide (polymyxin) antibacterial

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPEPIPCP

Mechanism of Action

Polymyxin B is a cationic cyclic decapeptide whose positively charged diaminobutyric acid residues bind the anionic lipid A of Gram-negative lipopolysaccharide, displacing the stabilising calcium and magnesium bridges. This disorganises the outer membrane, allows the fatty acyl tail to insert into the cytoplasmic membrane, and causes leakage of intracellular contents and rapid cell death. The same lipid A affinity gives it endotoxin-neutralising activity.
