Praziquantel molecular structure

Praziquantel

Also known as: Biltricide, Cesol, Distocide, Cysticide, Praziquantel Arpraziquantel

CAS Number: 55268-74-1

Anthelmintic (Pyrazinoisoquinoline, Antitrematodal/Anticestodal)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Praziquantel rapidly increases calcium permeability across the schistosome and cestode tegument, most likely by acting on a transient receptor potential channel of the TRPM subfamily. The calcium influx produces violent muscular contraction, tegumental vacuolisation and disruption, exposing parasite antigens to host immune attack. Adult flukes and tapeworms are affected, while immature schistosomula are relatively refractory.
