Rifapentine molecular structure

Rifapentine

Also known as: Priftin, Rifapent, P-Tin

CAS Number: 61379-65-5

Antitubercular (Long-Acting Rifamycin)

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPIPWHO

Mechanism of Action

Rifapentine inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase by binding its beta subunit, arresting bacterial transcription in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Its cyclopentyl piperazinyl substitution confers a markedly longer elimination half-life than rifampicin, sustaining suppressive concentrations between widely spaced doses. That pharmacokinetic profile is what makes once-weekly and short-course regimens feasible.
