Secnidazole
Also known as: Solosec, Flagentyl, Secnil, Secnidal, Sindose
CAS Number: 3366-95-8
Long-acting nitroimidazole antiprotozoal
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Secnidazole is reduced intracellularly by anaerobic and microaerophilic organisms to nitro radical anions that damage DNA and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, in common with the rest of the nitroimidazole class. Its distinguishing feature is a plasma half-life of roughly seventeen to twenty-nine hours, several times longer than metronidazole, which allows a complete course to be delivered as a single dose. That pharmacokinetic profile is the entire commercial rationale for the molecule.
