Mechanism of Action
Spiramycin binds the 50S ribosomal subunit at the peptidyl transferase region and inhibits translocation during bacterial protein synthesis. Its unusually high and persistent intracellular tissue concentrations, particularly in placental and salivary tissue, distinguish it from other 16-membered macrolides. It also suppresses Toxoplasma gondii replication, which underpins its obstetric use.
