Streptomycin Sulfate
Also known as: Ambistryn-S, Streptonex, Cadistrep, Strepto-Fatol
CAS Number: 3810-74-0
Antitubercular / Aminoglycoside Antibiotic
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Streptomycin binds irreversibly to the 16S ribosomal RNA within the 30S ribosomal subunit, principally at the S12 protein interface. This binding causes misreading of the messenger RNA codons and blocks translocation, producing aberrant proteins and eventual membrane damage. The effect is concentration-dependent bactericidal killing of actively multiplying extracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
