Sulbactam Sodium
Also known as: Unasyn (with ampicillin), Sulperazon (with cefoperazone), Sultamicillin, Betamaze
CAS Number: 69388-84-7
Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor (Penicillanic Acid Sulfone)
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Sulbactam is a penicillanic acid sulfone that acts as a mechanism-based inhibitor of class A beta-lactamases, forming a covalent acyl-enzyme intermediate that resists deacylation. Protecting the partner beta-lactam from hydrolysis restores activity against many beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Unusually for this class, sulbactam also has intrinsic activity against Acinetobacter baumannii through direct binding to PBP1 and PBP3.
