Sulfacetamide Sodium molecular structure

Sulfacetamide Sodium

Also known as: Bleph-10, Klaron, Ovace, Albucid, Sulamyd

CAS Number: 127-56-0

Topical and ophthalmic sulfonamide antibacterial

Pharmacopeia Standards

USPBPIPEP

Mechanism of Action

Sulfacetamide sodium competitively inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase and prevents synthesis of folic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid, giving a bacteriostatic effect against common ocular and cutaneous pathogens. The sodium salt is highly water soluble and near neutral in solution, which allows the high concentrations used in eye drops without excessive irritation. In acne and seborrhoeic dermatitis it is usually paired with sulfur for a combined antibacterial and keratolytic effect.
