Mechanism of Action
Sulfadiazine competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthase and blocks incorporation of para-aminobenzoic acid into dihydropteroic acid, starving susceptible bacteria and protozoa of folate. Combined with pyrimethamine it gives sequential folate blockade that is the standard regimen for toxoplasmic encephalitis. As the silver salt it additionally delivers ionic silver that denatures microbial proteins at the burn wound surface.
