Mechanism of Action
Tazobactam is a triazolylmethyl penicillanic acid sulfone that irreversibly acylates the active-site serine of class A beta-lactamases, including many extended-spectrum enzymes. The resulting stable acyl-enzyme complex prevents hydrolysis of the partner beta-lactam. Its inhibitory spectrum is broader than sulbactam and it has essentially no intrinsic antibacterial activity of its own.
