Veterinary macrolide antibiotic
Pharmacopeia Standards
Mechanism of Action
Tilmicosin is a semisynthetic macrolide derived from tylosin that binds the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits peptide chain elongation, with particular potency against Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasma species. It accumulates to very high concentrations in lung tissue and alveolar macrophages, which sustains a therapeutic effect for several days after a single dose. That same tissue affinity makes the injectable form cardiotoxic to humans, horses and swine on accidental exposure.
