Mechanism of Action
Tinidazole diffuses into anaerobic bacteria and protozoa where the 5-nitro group is reduced by ferredoxin-type electron transport proteins to cytotoxic nitro radical anions. These radicals fragment DNA and inhibit further nucleic acid synthesis, producing rapid cell death. Aerobic organisms lack the low-redox-potential reduction systems required, which confines activity to anaerobes and microaerophiles.
