Mechanism of Action
Tylosin binds the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit at the macrolide site and blocks translocation of the growing peptide chain, giving bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive organisms, Mycoplasma species and some anaerobes. It concentrates well in respiratory and intestinal tissue, which underpins its use against Mycoplasma gallisepticum in poultry and Lawsonia intracellularis in swine. The tartrate salt is water soluble and is the form used for drinking-water and injectable presentations.
